How To Collect Coordinate Using Google Map App in Field Study

Collecting accurate geographic coordinates in field studies is essential for mapping, research, and spatial analysis. The Google Maps app provides an easy way to obtain precise latitude and longitude data directly from your mobile device. Follow these simple steps to collect coordinates efficiently

Steps to Follow:

Step 1: Turn on Phone Location

Navigate the settings of your smartphone and ensure your GPS/location services are enabled

Step 1: Open Google Maps

Launch the Google Maps app on your smartphone and ensure your GPS/location services are enabled for accurate positioning.

Step 2: Locate Your Position

When you get to that spot/place, you want to represent in a map...

Allow the app to detect your current location or manually tap on the red circular icon with a question mark inside it to enable the system to spot you (exactly where your phone is)

Step 3: Drop a Pin

When it has spotted you, the red circular icon turns blue while another blue dot appears amid the app and blinks, that my friend is your supposed location.

Now press and hold (for about 3 secs) the new blue dot which was recently blinking. when you lift your finger a red pin should appear in it's place along with the coordinates.

Step 4: View and Copy the Coordinates

On holding the blue dot the latitude and longitude will be displayed at the top and bottom of the screen. Tap on it to copy the coordinates.

Or you can screenshot it and save it to your phone

NOTE: Make sure to save each coordinate with the respective name of the feature it is representing.

Step 5: Save or Share the Coordinates

You can save the location by adding it to your favourites or sharing it via messaging apps, email, or a document for later reference.

Note: you can arrange them in a spreadsheet like Excel to make for easy usage in the GIS environment.

With these simple steps, you can accurately collect coordinates for your field study without additional tools.
